First of the new VO65 One Designs heads to its base in Lanzarote
Green Marine, a leading yard for the construction of high performance composite racing yachts, has bid farewell to the first of the new Volvo Ocean 65 one-design boats that will compete in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. Team SCA has completed its sea trials and is now heading off to its base in Lanzarote to prepare for next years race.
Meanwhile, work is underway at Green Marines factory near Southampton, UK on the next four boats in the series, with two currently nearing completion. In total, seven have been ordered for construction by Volvo Ocean Race with the possibility of more to follow.
As lead contractor of a build consortium, Green Marine is responsible for the complete assembly and fit out of the VO65s, as well as overseeing the quality of the consortiums work. Over the course of an 18-week period for each boat, the Green Marine team assembles the primary and secondary structures, installs and fits out the interior including all electrical, hydraulic, steering and other systems, fits the keel and deck gear, and finally paints and commissions the finished yacht.
Its a challenge, says Green Marines Technical Director Geoff Stock. We are working to a precise time schedule and within that we have a global supply chain to co-ordinate and manage, but we are ideally placed to build large, advanced composite yachts and we have long experience specifically in building racing yachts of this type.
In fact Team SCA is the eighth boat to be built by Green Marine for the Volvo Ocean Race over its 40-year history. At the end of the day this is all about reliability and consistency as well as producing an extremely high performance boat, concludes Geoff Stock. Green Marine has the organisational skills as well as the technical capabilities to deliver both. We are confident that the VO65 will serve Team SCA well in the challenging conditions that await them. We wish them safe and successful sailing.
